Japanese firm eyes Davao suppliers

A Japanese company is now looking for a local processed chicken and other poultry meat supplier in the city for their consumers in Japan.

With this, the Maruyu Co. Ltd. has requested the City Government of Davao government for cooperation and interview for their study on the possible local suppliers.

In an interview on Monday evening at Grand Men Seng Hotel, Maruyu Co. Ltd. president Takeshi Nagano told EDGE Davao through his interpreter Ranell Jane Ganad that the company chose the city because of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), to which homegrown Ana’s Breeder Farms Inc. is one of its members.

Nagano said the firm is in search of local suppliers to supply the demand in Japan. Mary Co supplies hospitals, nursery homes and schools in their country.
He said to help them to conduct the feasibility, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recommended the Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) of Japan.
The PWC will study the poultry farms and processing plants in Mindanao, with the majority of these in Davao City.
Nagano said the company is working on its first partnership with Ana’s in which their communication started three years ago.

For three years the company has been supporting the Ana’s for them to comply with the Japanese standards of cutting their chicken meats, according to Nagano.
Ana’s is not yet suppliers because the training on the meat cutting and deboning.
“We have already sent a three kilos sample to Ana’s last June or July. Eventually, its ok, all the results were positive,” Nagano said.

Ana’s is also studying the standard weight of the chicken to be exported to Japan because it is one of the factors for exportation Nagano said the Ana’s is now processing its documents to export in Japan. The company is also planning to establish an office in the city for an easy transaction with the supplier and the company.
The company’s proposal was referred to the committee on Agriculture and food headed by Davao City Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella.

Abella said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)- Davao City director Edwin Banquerigo referred the company after asking help from the agency.

She said the company already conducted a consultative meeting last week with the Department of Agriculture and Davao City Investment Board.
